Yellow balau facts

Yellow balau, native to Southeast Asia, comes in a variety of color tones, from buttery yellow to golden brown to red. Homeowners love the look of this hardwood, which has a smooth even texture, and they especially that it needs little to no maintenance. Naturally resistant to decay, insects, and fungus, yellow balau is a durable, dense wood so it’s perfect for outdoor applications.

Yellow balau maintenance

Like all the hardwoods we sell, untreated yellow balau will age beautifully to a silver patina. If you appreciate this aging process, then no coating or sealers need to be used. If you’d rather maintain your wood’s original tones, a UV inhibitor can be applied annually. A quick cleaning a few times a year will be enough to keep your deck looking great.

How tough is yellow balau?

Yellow balau is a durable hardwood with a 30+ year lifespan. It has a Janka Hardness rating of 1,600 pounds, which is softer than other tropical hardwoods like ipe and cumaru but much harder than domestic woods like redwood or cedar. Yellow balau is also dense and resistant to:

  • Decay and rot
  • Extreme weather
  • Splinters
  • Insects

How to use yellow balau

Yellow balau can be used in many exterior and interior applications. Consider using yellow balau for the following:

  1. Outdoor structures: If you’re looking to build a trellis, pergola, gazebo, or fence, yellow balau is a great option. The wood is beautiful and it’s an appealing option for those looking to reduce their environmental impact. Since this wood is untreated, there are no nasty chemicals. Plus, it can easily repurposed at the end of its life. Yellow balau also has a long life cycle. Longevity is an important part of sustainability since it means you’re not replacing the same item every time it breaks down. Once you build a yellow balau structure, you won’t have to worry about replacing it any time soon.
  2. Flooring: Yellow balau can be used as interior flooring. It gives a gorgeous, rich look to a home and it’s so hard that it’s not susceptible to normal wear-and-tear.
  3. Furniture: Yellow balau makes strong, beautiful furniture (that also looks great with your yellow balau deck!). This furniture can last over 25 years even when exposed to wild weather. With its remarkable durability, yellow balau furniture is an investment that can hold up to dogs, children, and even rowdy parties.
  4. Decking: Last but not least! Yellow balau is a great decking material. It’s long-lasting, durable, and resistant to pests.

A yellow balau deck increases the value of your home

A yellow balau hardwood deck will enhance your enjoyment of your home and increase its value at the same time. Time and time again, studies show that wood decks are a valued home improvement project. Homeowners can recoup nearly 75% of the project’s cost when they sell their house. Having a beautiful deck helps your home sell faster while providing your family with a functional space that gives you a beautiful space to enjoy the outdoors.
